For tax purposes the choice makes little difference, since both are generally taxed in box 3; we set that out in the tax comparison between holding crypto yourself and through a fund. In practice the difference is considerable. Below is what you own in each case, who keeps the keys, what it costs and when you can get in and out.

What you actually own

If you buy the coins yourself, you hold them directly. You control access and are responsible for keeping the keys secure. In a fund you do not buy coins but a participation: a claim on the fund assets in proportion to what you put in. The legal form is a Dutch fund for joint account (fonds voor gemene rekening, FGR), and the assets are held in the name of a foundation that holds legal title to them. That keeps the fund assets separate from the assets of the manager. What you hold, in other words, is a claim rather than a set of keys.

Who keeps the keys

This is the largest practical difference. Your own coins require your own wallet and a recovery phrase you cannot afford to lose: lose the phrase without a backup and the coins are gone, and no institution will reverse that. The risk grows with the amount, and at larger holdings custody becomes a discipline in its own right. How that is arranged professionally is covered in our article on custody for larger holdings. In a fund that responsibility lies with a specialist custodian. At Callisto Capital that is Amdax, with AssetCare acting as the independent administrator.

What it costs

Buying yourself costs money per transaction: trading fees on the platform, the spread between bid and ask, and sometimes network fees on withdrawal. There is no annual charge. A fund works the other way round. There are no entry costs, but investors who redeem pay a 1% exit charge on the amount withdrawn, which goes to the participants who stay in. The management fee is 2% per year on the net asset value of the fund, calculated at the month-end NAV. Since 1 August 2026 there is also a performance fee on a tiered schedule based on each participant’s total investment. It is charged only on profit above the highest level the NAV has previously reached, the high watermark. Administration costs are borne by the fund. Buying yourself is cheaper in fees and more expensive in time; in a fund that balance is reversed.

When you can get in and out

On your own you trade at any time and for any amount. A fund has fixed moments. Entry is possible monthly on the first trading day at net asset value, from 100,000 euros, with follow-up deposits from 25,000 euros. Redemption follows the same calendar: the fund repurchases participations on the first day of the new month, and the request has to be in at least five working days before that date. A partial redemption is at least 10,000 euros, and what remains may not fall below 100,000 euros. That rhythm follows from the monthly valuation. It does mean you cannot enter or exit at any moment you choose.

Who decides when to trade

Investing on your own means deciding on your own, including on the days the market moves against you. That is harder than it sounds, because crypto volatility makes the temptation to deviate greatest at exactly the worst moments. The Callisto Capital fund therefore follows a systematic, trend-following strategy: positions are managed according to rules set in advance, not on sentiment. That takes the daily execution decision out of your hands. In return you give up control over individual transactions: the system may trade at moments when you would have made a different decision.

Which route suits whom

Buying yourself is the more obvious route for investors who want to understand the technology, who are willing to arrange custody themselves and who hold amounts they could afford to lose. A crypto investment fund is the more obvious route for those who would rather outsource the execution: one position instead of a string of wallets and platforms, a monthly valuation, an independent administrator and a strategy that does not depend on your calendar. Whichever route fits, the tax treatment is broadly the same; the work behind it differs a great deal.

If you would like to take this further, we would rather receive you at our office than handle it by e-mail. In an introductory meeting we go through how the fund works, what it does and does not do, and what participation means in practice. You can arrange a meeting through our contact page.

Callisto Capital manages a crypto fund for high net worth individuals and entrepreneurs.
