Both describe the same problem, yet solve it differently. They determine how a network without a central party establishes which transactions are valid.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bitcoin runs on proof-of-work, ethereum on proof-of-stake since 2022. For an investor that is no technical detail. It bears on the security, the degree of decentralisation and the energy profile of the underlying asset.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consensus without a central party<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a bank balance, the bank records who owns what. This is precisely what explains why a crypto network can still function reliably without an intermediary.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proof-of-work: security through computing power<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In proof-of-work, so-called miners compete to be the first to solve a cryptographic puzzle. The winner may add the next block and receives a reward for doing so. The computation consumes a great deal of energy, and that is exactly what makes the network secure: a successful attack would demand a prohibitive amount of computing power. Bitcoin has operated on this principle since 2009, with one new block every ten minutes on average. The difficulty adjusts automatically, so that this rhythm remains stable.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proof-of-stake: security through staked capital<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proof-of-stake replaces computing power with capital. Participants, known as validators, lock up a portion of their own coins as collateral. The network then assigns them to validate blocks. Anyone who breaks the rules forfeits part of that stake. <a href=\"https:\/\/callistocapital.nl\/en\/what-is-ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> completed this transition on 15 September 2022.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The trade-off between security and energy<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here lies the heart of proof-of-work vs proof-of-stake. Proof-of-work is regarded as proven and robust, but consumes a great deal of energy. Ethereum&#8217;s consumption fell by roughly 99.95 percent after the transition, according to the Ethereum Foundation. Firm comparisons remain difficult, as estimates diverge and the energy source used carries weight. Proof-of-stake is more efficient, but also younger.
